Antidepressants treat depression and related conditions. They help with symptoms like sadness, hopelessness, low energy, and trouble concentrating.

The main types of antidepressants are:

- SSRIs (Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors): Commonly prescribed, including fluoxetine (Prozac) and citalopram (Celexa).

- SNRIs (Serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors): Similar to SSRIs but also affect noradrenaline.

- Tricyclics: Help noradrenaline and serotonin last longer but may cause more side effects.

- MAOIs (Monoamine oxidase inhibitors): Prevent breakdown of noradrenaline and serotonin but require a special diet.

Serious side effects, like serotonin syndrome, can also occur. Most side effects decrease over time, but a doctor may recommend trying a different medication if they don't.

Although antidepressants improve mood by boosting brain chemicals, they can cause side effects like:

- Drowsiness

- Headaches

- Nausea

- Sexual dysfunction

- Insomnia

- Dry mouth

- Blurred vision

- Constipation

- Dizziness

- Anxiety

If you're currently on an antidepressant that seems to be effective and you aren't facing any unwanted side effects, continue using it. However, if it’s not providing satisfactory results or you’re dealing with undesirable side effects, it’s important to discuss alternative options with your doctor.
